LAHRAC hosted cloud seminar on “Cutting-Edge Issues of Latin American Historical Studies”

  September 5, 2020 (Shi Weitong reports)- The seminar on “Cutting-Edge Issues of Latin American Historical Studies” was held via video on Saturday. This event, hosted by Latin American History Research Association of China (LAHRAC) and organized by the Institute of World History (IWH), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS), gathered over 90 researchers, faculties and students from several institutes of higher learning, such as Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations(CICIR), Peking University, Nankai University and others.

  Over ten scholars addressed on the seminar. Some of them are presiding over scientific research projects, and shared the latest research results. This was the highlight of the seminar. Xu Shicheng, Senior Research Fellow outlined the latest development of Cuba-US relations. Professor Han Qi aired his views about the nature and causes of failure of the Socialist Republic of Chile in 1932. Professor Jiang Shixue explored the role of Latin America in the world economic system from the perspective of history and reality. Professor Dong Guohui analyzed Raul Prebisch’s experiences in Europe in 1933 and its influences. Professor Dong Jingsheng studied the process of self-reformation of the Communist Party of Brazil. There were other topics discussed, such as the latest situation and changes of political environments since 2018 in Latin America, the issues of immigration etc.

  Wang Wenxian, Deputy President of the LAHRAC, Senior Research Fellow of IWH gave some closing words. She said, this conference was a gala for topics, both conventional and new, as well as perspectives, either general or specific. The meeting was warm, extensive, and in-depth. She also hoped this seminar would boost the development of Latin American historical studies.
