Symposium on Marxism and World History Studies Held in IWH

On May the 22nd, 2018, the annual symposium on Marxism and world history studies was held in Institute of World History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The director of IWH, Researcher Chaoguang Wang gave a lecture titled “The Victory of the War of Resistance against Japan and the Renaissance of the Chinese Nation”.

Researcher Wang explained how to interpret the War of Resistance against Japan from the perspective of Marxist historical materialism. The whole lecture consists two parts. The former part presents the significance of the War of Resistance against Japan. Researcher Wang pointed out that the invasion of Japan brought disasters to China; and the War of Resistance against Japan is a just war for Chinese people who were struggling for national sovereign and independence. The War of Resistance against Japan provides the key for China’s rise; it is the first anti-aggression war fully won by China since 1840; it leaves rich heritage for China then and afterwards and has great historical significance. Researcher Wang demonstrate his view from four aspects.

The latter part discusses the lessons learned from the War of Resistance against Japan. Researcher Wang points out that these lessons ask us to recognize the four facts listed below. First, it is our duty to maximize our national interests. Every nation has her natural rights to strive for and secure the maximization of the national interests. Second, modernization is a complexity. Modern warfare is based on modernization and is a competition of comprehensive national strength; therefore modernization is not only military, but also economic and social. Third, national solidarity is of key importance for one nation’s fate. Fourth, we should pay great attention to strategies and tactics in warfare, and fully realize the significance of strategic choices.

At the end of his lecture, Researcher Wang exhibited many photos taken during the War of Resistance against Japan and introduced rich details of the war by visual data vividly. He also emphasized that we should advocate for the positive values of the War of Resistance against Japan.
