Tang Liguo, Pre-Modern Military Strategics and the Transformation of Modernization in Japan
2020-12-03
Yamagaryuu military strategics is one of the representative pre-modern military strategics of Japan, aiming at meeting the needs of samurai's change from warriors to rulers. This is a comprehensive scholarship which consists of military strategics, ethics, and politics, and Bushido is an indispensable part of it. As the successor to Yamagaryuu, Yoshida Syouin never lost his faith in pre-modern military strategics. On the contrary, he sought change and transformation to a certain degree. His thinking model which regarded military issues as political and moral issues enabled him to recognise that the threat faced by Japan was both the military crisis and the political crisis which could even probably develop into the crisis of national identification. The intellectual resources provided by Yamagaryuu military strategics made him become a forerunner of the Meiji Restoration.
