Xiong Ying, The Newly Discovered Funerary Inscription in Pompeii and Local Politics in the Last Days of the Ancient City

  In 2017, an anonymous Roman tomb of the second half of the 1st century was discovered outside Porta Stabia of the ancient city Pompeii. Its funerary inscription is of great research value, since it not only commemorates numerous generous donations and magnanimous acts of this tomb's occupant, but also sheds light on some major events and crucial information in the last days of the city. On the basis of interpreting the inscripton, this analysis of such information will contribute to identifying the tomb's occupant, and to revealing the working mechanism of colonia Pompeii in the early Roman Empire, as well as to understanding the relationship between the central government and the local community
