Introduction to China Association of Modem World History
China Association of Modem World History is a mass academic society on modern world history. It is charged by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and attached to Institute of World History, CASS. China Association of Modem World History was established in 1991. Currently it has over 700 members. The commanding institution of the society is the council elected by the representative meeting of its members and is made up of the director, associate director, secretory general and several trustees.
In 1992, China Association of Early Modem World History and China Association of Contemporary World History was combined into China Association of Modem World History. It contains two councils, namely Council of Early Modern World History and Council of Contemporary World History.
The activities of China Association of Modem World History includes the following three aspects.
a. Holding academic conference
May 1993: Symposium on “World and China in 1990s”, Beijing
1994: Discussion on “the Contemporary Theoretical System of World History”, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province
May 1995: Conference on World History in the 20th Century, Xiangtan, Hunan Province
June 1995: Conference in memory of the 50th anniversary of the victory of Chinese anti-Japanese War and World anti-Fascism War
November 1995: Symposium on “China and World since 1850s”, Beijing
August 1996: Conference on “Retrospect and Forecast on the Eve of the 21st Century”, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province
1997 and 1998: Two conferences held respectively at Mianyang, Sichuan Provice and Tongling, Anhui Province
September 1999: the fourth annual conference and academic symposium, Shenyang, Liaoning Province
b. Organizing Academic Research
Annual conferences and academic discussions comprise of one part of academic research. These activities reports the latest development of academic research to the society’s members, encourage them to make academic innovations.
In the encouragement and support of the society, a series of academic works have been produced. Instances include Documents of Modern World History edited by Chunwu Li; Modern World History edited by Jingxu Guan, Honglie Huang and Huarong Guo; Theoretical Analysis on Major Issues of the Modern World edited by Yun Yang and Shulin Liu; Modern Cities and Modernization by Zhongping Cao, etc. In the study of contemporary world history, the members of the society has produced many textbooks, monographs and collections of historical documents, as well as lots of papers, translations and references. Some scholars also attempted to construct a new system to write world history, edited and composed influential textbooks on world history such as World History from Scattered to Integrated collectively composed by university teachers in Hubei and Hunan and World History (in 6 vols.) edited by Yujin Wu and Shirong Qi; and the latter is the representative work of the discipline of world history in China. In the support of the society, World History in the 20th Century edited by Zhisai Li presents the latest achievement of the study of world history in China at the end of the 20th century. The society also encourages its members to extend their research area. In 1994, World Cultural History in the 20th Century was published in support of the society adds new content for the narrative of modern world history and creates new research area. In recent years, with the support of the society, its members has done lots of work and produced a group of academic papers and monographs of high quality, which has elevated the standard of the study of modern world history. The outlook of global history is being shaped.

China Association of Modem World History contains two councils, namely Council of Early Modern World History and Council of Contemporary World History.
