Compatriots of Macau have a good tradition of loving China and Macau. When People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, compatriots of Macau built their first pailou to celebrate the birth of new China. From then till early 1970s, on every National Day, compatriots of Macau always built pailou and caipai at crossroad and patriotic institutes, prepared performance to give bless to their motherland. The pailou was designed by patriotic artists and was built by manual workers. They were beautiful, unique and conveyed patriotic feelings, which helped to celebrate the National Day and were appreciated by citizens and tourists of Macau. The exhibition shows some representative pictures of them. They are already recorded in history and become patriotic textbooks for younger generations.

The honourable but difficult task was taken by chief members of Art Association of Macau from the very beginning. They organized many youth students to design pailou after class. Some young people who used to design pailou have become leading artists in Macau; and the design of pailou also becomes the cradle of Macau artists. Xi Lu said that pailou is one type of comprehensive art, which recorded achievements of China in industry, agriculture, science, culture, education and sports year by year. Macau citizens learned about the latest development of their motherland through the pailou on National Day every year. These pailou convey encouragement and patriotic education for Macau people, and serve as an indispensable part of the history of Macau. The exhibition aims to share the memorable history of the pailou through these historical pictures, and show the patriotic spirit of Macau people to the audience, which is always cherished by Macau compatriots. Some artists who used to design pailou believe the building of pailou enhanced their patriotic spirit, examined their ability, and served as an important education of patriotism.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the return of Macau. In the guidance of the “one country, two system” policy, the development of Macau is going on well and sets up a good example of the success of this policy. The future of Macau will be even better. Macau compatriots will go hand in hand with mainland people in the march to realize the great “Chinese dream”.

The exhibition is co-organized by Information Department of CAH and China Academy of International Culture, and will last from December the 2nd to December the 11th.
