On August 17th, 2020, the Symposium on the Research and Compilation of Chinese African History in the New Era and the Forum for Young Historians was held both online and offline, sponsored by the Chinese Society of African Historical Studies (CSAH) and organized by the Department of African History of IWH, CASS.
In his speech to the symposium, Chaoguang Wang, Director of IWH, briefly reviewed the history of China-Africa friendly exchanges and cooperation, and pointed out that the research and compilation of African history were facing new changes and opportunities. He supposed that, it was time for Chinese historians of African Studies to work together, and produce collective works.
Xinfeng Li, Executive Vice-President of China-Africa Institute, CASS and Vice President of CSAH, gave a speech to introduce the tenet and research of the Institute.
Anshan Li, President of CSAH and professor at Peking University, pointed out that China’s knowledge of Africa was still lacking. There are still gaps in the African Studies by Chinese scholars, for example, on the archaeological situation, ancient institutions and their development in modern times, history of ideological changes, history of social customs, history of religious beliefs, history of languages and cultures, history of international relations, and distribution of ethnic groups and their migration routes in African countries.
The symposium was divided into three sections, with topics as “Research and Compilation of African History”, “Construction of African History and Its Schools” and “Argumentation and Examination on the African History”.
