Academic Report by Professor Xu Xiaoxu, Renmin University of China

Wen Jing reports: On November 11th 2022, the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of the Institute of World History (IWH) and the Center for Comparative Studies of Ancient Civilizations (CCSAC), Chinese Academy of History invited Professor Xu Xiaoxu, School of History, Renmin University of China to give an online lecture entitled “The Language and Culture of Ancient Greece”. In the lecture he analyzed the relationship between Ancient Greek language and the Indo-European language family, introducing the linguistic tool of Substratum, and pointed out that Greek is conservative in terms of phonology and morphology. He then made a chronological survey of the development of the Greek language from Mycenaean Greek and Linear B to Koine Greek and presented different theories about the categorical and geographical groups of Greek dialects.
