The Section of Russian and Eastern European History

  The Section of Russian and Eastern European Studies mainly does research on Russian history and the history of Eastern European countries. Our specific subjects political, economic, cultural and diplomatic history of Russia, the histories of Hungary, Bulgaria, Poland, Romania and former Yugoslavia, as well as the history of the Communist Movement.

  The section was set up in 1982. It has undertaken many national key projects and has published collective academic monographs such as An Outline of the History of the USSR (1917-1937), An Outline of the History of the USSR (1953-1964), and The Postwar Eastern Europe: Reformation and Crisis. Currently, we are undertaking the national key project named “The Rise and Fall of the USSR”. Our section has gained a mastery of major languages needed for our research and owns a team of competent and prominent historians, who respectively do research on the history of Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria, former Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania and the history of the Communist Movement. In the recent two decades, we have published over 20 academic monographs, including A Critical Biography of Trotsky by Xianrong Li, An Outline of the History of the USSR, vols. 1-3 edited by Zhihua Chen, A History of the Development of the Cultural Organizations of the USSR by Shanlong Ma, A Biography of Bukharin by Yi Wen, The Postwar Eastern Europe: Reformation and Crisis edited By Xipu Ma, Kadar and Hungary by Sijing Kan, A Biography of Gomulka by Bangyi Liu, A Victorious Defeater: Biography of Blanqui by Tejin Cao, Sun Yat-Sen University in Moscow by Yaowen Sun, and our collective production A History of Commune de Paris, and so on.

  In the mid-1980s, our section used to own 16 members at its maximum. Today, our section is comprised by 10 members, including 2 researchers and 2 associate researchers. We have 1 doctoral supervisor and 1 master tutor. In the last two decades, 5 doctors and 4 masters graduated from our section and most of them are playing important roles in the academic research and the administration of their workplace.
