Department of Ancient and Medieval History
The department was established in 1978, aiming to do research on ancient and medieval history from primitive times to around the sixteenth century. Research focuses of current 6 members cover institutional study of primitive society, Assyriology, Egyptology, Hittitology, ancient Greek and Roman history, ancient Japanese history, ancient Korean history, medieval history of western Europe, Byzantine history, etc.
Our faculties can communicate fluently with international scholars in English, German, French, Japanese, etc. They can also read several ancient languages, such as Akkadian, Hittite, Greek, Latin, in their academic research.
In recent years, our department has hosted several national research projects, and took part in many other projects funded by CASS and IWH. Our research fellows have also published over 20 individual monographs and over 30 translations of foreign historical works.
The department offers several courses at the College of History, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, such as World History (1), World History (2), Literature of Foreign History, Lectures on Ancient Eastern Civilizations, Lectures on Ancient Western Civilizations, Ancient Greek Language, Ancient Latin Language, etc.
We also have graduate students in the fields of ancient western Asia history, ancient Indian history, ancient Greek history, ancient Roman history, medieval history of England, ancient Korean history; and Ph.D. students in ancient western and southern Asian history.
The department hopes to strengthen cooperation and exchange with colleagues in and outside the country, and sincerely invites young talents who are interested in the study of Ancient and Medieval history to join us.
