Department of Pacific and Pacific Countries History
Department of Pacific and Pacific Countries History (PPCH), established in December 2019, is one of the newest research units at the Institute of World History. It aims to explore the role of Pacific, the largest ocean in human progress and research the history of the countries in the Pacific region. The research unit now has 4 permanent staffs, including 2 Research Fellows, 1 Associate Research Fellow and 1 Research Assistant.
As an emerging discipline, history of the Pacific and Pacific Countries explores natural changes and human activities in the Pacific region, with special emphasis laid on the political, economic, and cultural development of major countries in the region since modern times. Our research focuses include but are not limited to the following fields: history of the Pacific, of Australia, of New Zealand, of Pacific Islands, and of Southeast Asia as a whole; expansion, competition, and confrontation of world powers in the Pacific region; historical connections and comparative studies of the Pacific rim countries; effects of the Pacific on major human activities; the formation and evolution of the interactive network of the Pacific world.
The department now undertakes two projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China and two innovation projects funded by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and participates several key projects assigned by the CASS. We are now committed to strengthening disciplinary development and expanding external exchanges. We sincerely invite young talents who are interested in this field to join us!
